O sing to the Lord, as the Church has been summoned to do in these Latin words for many centuries. Always it is to be a new song, new in every age. The great prophet of the new thing that God was about to do during Israel’s exile in Babylon (see Isa. 40–55, especially 41:25; 42:10–13; 48:20; 52:13ff; 54:1–3) is the inspiration of this poem. The psalmist declares: God has done marvellous things. This word is reserved for acts of God, such as science cannot account for. And so it is here. Isa. 45:1–7
